Single storey extension

Wiviliscombe

About the project

This single-storey extension in Wiveliscombe was a truly bespoke project, defined by its craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout. The brief was to create a large kitchen extension with a seamless connection to the existing house, achieved through a structural knock-through and the formation of a generous new patio area. Structurally, the extension was built using a reinforced raft foundation, a cranked steel frame, insulated timber frame infill and finished with a high-performance single-ply roof system.

Externally, the project is striking. Siberian larch cladding was hand-charred by the Monkton team to create a unique façade. This process not only delivers a bold, individual aesthetic but also significantly enhances durability. Standout features include the charred larch fins and baffles, meticulously detailed with varying board widths to ensure perfectly aligned joints and mitres.

Additional details such as lead parapet cappings, handmade lead rainwater goods, full-height glazed timber windows and oversized slimline aluminium doors elevate the design further. Internally, a handmade kitchen and built-in bench seating sit alongside large-format porcelain tiles, giving a polished concrete-style finish. The cranked steel beam allows the ceiling to rise through the space, drawing the eye towards expansive views beyond.
